The Che Kung Temple at Ho Chung in Sai Kung is believed to be over 400 years old and, while a bit off the beaten track, is well worth a visit. It was built by the Ho Chung community and served the half-dozen villages in the Ho Chung valley. Its location, with its Fung Shui woods behind it, the river immediately in front, and its well-preserved traditional design and architecture, make it one of the most auspicious traditional buildings in the New Territories. The narrow roadway in front of the temple, along the river bank, used to be the main route from Sai Kung market to Kowloon. It passed through the valley and then steeply up the hillside to Pik Uk and over the pass to Kowloon City. The area around the temple used to be entirely rural, but over the years, the area has undergone industrial and residential development.

西貢蠔涌車公廟坐落蠔涌河河畔，已有逾400年歷史，祀奉車公。車公廟雖位處鄉郊，但仍極具參觀價值。相傳車公是宋朝(公元960-1278年)一位大元帥，曾平定華南一場叛亂，後來蒙道教奉為神明。他跟隨宋帝昺南下來港，駐守西貢。車公愛民若子，深受村民尊敬和愛戴，他逝世後，村民為了紀念他，便建立車公廟，供奉其祖孫三代，並供蠔涌谷附近六條鄉村的村民參拜。


蠔涌車公廟是新界著名的傳統建築之一。車公廟的選址及建築布局甚佳，前臨涌澗，背向風水林，並保留了傳統的建築設計。廟宇前沿涌澗的狹窄通道，原本是從西貢墟通往九龍的主要道路；此通道可穿過山谷，陡峭山坡延展至壁屋，跨越山坳直達九龍城。昔日的車公廟環山抱水，綠意盎然，如今四周已發展為工業及住宅區。


在蠔涌村村民之間，流傳着一個家喻戶曉的民間故事：「白馬傳奇」。相傳車公廟建成後，村民集資購買了一隻白石馬給車大元帥作坐騎，並把石馬裝置在廟外。自此以後，怪事接連發生。原先盛產的禾稻，連年失收。同時，村民每早下田工作時，都發現稻田的禾穗東歪西倒，泥土上還留下野獸的足跡，後來，村中父老邀請了一位風水先生到村裏來，風水先生認為是白馬精作祟。於是，村民把白馬拆下，埋在廟門外的空地下面，並且在地上放置了一個爐躉。自此村裏天下太平，五穀豐收。
